Three old griffiths

John and Catherine Griffiths with a young girl, in a photograph taken in Slater Studios of Llandudno around 1890. As far as I know, there was only one daughter, Mary, who was born in 1855, and this girl looks too young. John was a Slate miner born in Caernarvonshire around 1824. Catherine was also born in Caernarvonshire, around 1826. Their son Richard married an orphan girl Margaret Ann Roberts in Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1881, where the whole family was living. Richard was a Slate miner also, one of few who worked in an Underground Slate mine, rather than the above ground quarry. The family lived in Blaenau Ffestiniog  between 1871 and 1891, on Tabernacle Terrace near the quarry at first and then they moved down to Cwm Bowydd road a bit down the hill. In the 1891 Census, Catherine is living as a widow "on her own means" on Cwm Bowydd Road and her son, Morris, was living with his family next door. Views of the town they lived in can be found HERE
